The LIBERTAS Collective commends the initiative of Marlène Mourier, mayor of Bourg-lès-Valence, who has appealed to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev to take humanitarian action on behalf of Ludwig Mkrtchyan, an Armenian prisoner of war who has been held in Baku for six years*.

Sponsored since 2023 by the City of Bourg-lès-Valence at the initiative of LIBERTAS, Ludwig Mkrtchyan, aged 56, currently suffers from serious heart problems requiring specialized and regular medical care. The mayor is calling for his situation to be examined from a strictly humanitarian perspective and for a solution that will allow for his release and appropriate medical care.

“Sponsoring Armenian prisoners must not be merely symbolic. When a detained man’s health is seriously deteriorating, solidarity must turn into action. Today we call for a humanitarian gesture on behalf of Ludwig Mkrtchyan.”

Hilda Tchoboian, LIBERTAS coordinator

For LIBERTAS, this initiative also serves as a reminder that behind every prisoner there is a family, a community, and citizens who refuse to let their plight be forgotten.

See you in Yerevan on October 16

This mobilization is part of the momentum building toward the LIBERTAS conference to be held in Yerevan on October 16, 2026, dedicated in particular to new avenues of action for the release of Armenian prisoners and to strengthening support for their families.

LIBERTAS calls on European local governments, parliamentarians, organizations, and citizens to maintain pressure and to increase concrete humanitarian initiatives.
