After the 2020 war, the LIBERTAS campaign aimed to secure the release of the 38 Armenian POWs through the sponsorship of each of them by cities, NGOs and celebrities. On December 7, 2023, the Libertas collective welcomed the release of 32 Armenian POWs and civilians, announced as part of an agreement between the Armenian and Azerbaijani governments.
These releases represented a victory and hope for the dozens of Armenians still illegally detained by Baku. But, several months after this liberation, where do we stand? Following this partial liberation and, above all, the forced displacement of the population of Artsakh [Nagorno-Karabakh] in inhumane conditions and the total occupation of the territory by the Azerbaijani army in September 2023, our campaign has adapted.

Our Objective: the immediate and unconditional release of all Armenian prisoners
The sponsorship of prisoners is at the heart of LIBERTAS solidarity campaign. Sponsoring an Armenian prisoner:

it protects him from cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment during his incarceration in one of the world's worst countries in terms of universal rights and freedoms, which is also suspected of using these men as hostages and bargaining chips to obtain ever more concessions from Armenia and Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh).

it's an important moral support for the hostages and their loved ones
Azerbaijan policy is in line with what the European Parliament rightly described in a resolution of March 10, 2022 as “astate policy of systematic Armenophobia, historical revisionism and hatred of Armenians promoted by the Azerbaijani authorities” (point 2). For example, the Azerbaijani Parliament adopted a declaration in March 2023 calling the Armenian diaspora “the cancerous tumor of Europe”.
